In a significant step forward for adventure sports and international cooperation, the World Rafting Federation, alongside the Indian Rafting Foundation, the Asian Council of the WRF and the Arunachal Pradesh Water Sports Association (APWSA) - signed a groundbreaking agreement last week.
The collaboration marks a new chapter for rafting in India, especially in the Northeast region. As per the agreement, all rafting events organized in Arunachal Pradesh and across India will now fall under the framework of the Asian Council of the WRF the WRF. This ensures that future events will be held to global standards and benefit from global visibility, structure, and technical support.
Mr. Shaukat Sikand - President of the Indian Rafting Foundation; Massimo Desiati WRF Member; Danilo Barmaz - WRF President; Gumnya Karkak - APWSA SAA Director; Nino Dani - APWSA President and Semi Doni - APWSA Secretary of hospitality.
A key element of the agreement is the official recognition of the APWSA as the authorized body for rafting and canoeing in Arunachal under the umbrella of the International Canoe Federation (ICF). This recognition will allow for more structured development in training, event organization and professional opportunities for local athletes and guides.
Speaking to the press, APWSA President Nino Dai shared his enthusiasm for what lies ahead. “This partnership will bring tremendous value not only to Arunachal but to the broader Indian rafting community. With the support of WRF, we will be able to develop river guide certification, conduct training workshops, and better raise local talent. Most importantly, this will help strengthen both community-based and ecotourism activities that are so vital to the region’s future.”
The agreement also represents a major milestone for the Asian rafting community, which continues to expand its reach. With Arunachal now joining other key hubs across the continent, the region strengthens its place as a growing center for whitewater sports. This expansion not only promotes inclusivity within the global rafting landscape but also contributes to building a more diverse and connected international community.
WRF President Danilo Barmaz commented on the significance of the agreement, saying:
"We are truly excited about the future this opens up. This collaboration is not just about events; it’s about growing together. With Arunachal now part of our global family, we’ve added a powerful new base in Asia. The path ahead is full of promise.”
As adventure sports continue to evolve and gain traction worldwide, this agreement signals not just organizational progress, but a shared vision for the future — one rooted in collaboration, community, and the natural beauty of the rivers that connect us.
