Pau, France - April 22, 2026

Rafting brings new energy to Pau during Worlds week - as part of the ongoing World Championships in Pau, a special rafting day was organized - after the morning training session of this week's races - to introduce young people to the sport while highlighting the international event taking place on the whitewater course.

A total of 100 students from middle and high schools took part in the initiative, including participants from the department’s inclusive sports program, which brings together students with and without disabilities. The event was held in collaboration with the UNSS (National Union of School Sports), an organization dedicated to promoting sports within the school environment in partnership with educational institutions.

Under expert supervision, the students experienced rafting firsthand on the Pau whitewater course. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with both students and teachers praising the activity for its accessibility, excitement, and team spirit. For many, it was not only a first introduction to rafting, but also a gateway into the broader world of paddle sports.

This initiative also highlighted an important vision for the future of artificial whitewater venues. Rafting represents a perfect complement to canoe and kayak activities, helping to maximize the use of such facilities. Its inclusive and widely accessible nature makes it an ideal sport for the channel, ensuring it remains active, sustainable, and open to a broader audience.

Events like this demonstrate how rafting can play a key role in developing participation at all levels. While many young participants are discovering the sport for the first time, some will continue their journey within the venue - returning as athletes, guides, or technicians. In fact, several of the students involved are already preparing to compete in the upcoming UNSS French Canoe-Kayak Championships, which will also take place in Pau later this summer.

Beyond competition, the presence of rafting during major international events such as World Championships and World Cups adds a vibrant and inclusive dimension. Seeing so many young people engaged on the same course as elite athletes reinforces the idea that these venues are not only for high performance, but also for growth, discovery, and community.
