SAGANA, KENYA – The waters of the Tana River are buzzing with a new, vibrant energy. Yesterday evening, on the banks of the river at the renowned Sagana Rapids Camp a spectacular and colorful Opening Ceremony officially kicked off one of the most anticipated events of the season: the African Rafting Championships, running concurrently with the prestigious World Rafting Cup stage.
For the first time a major international rafting event to the heart of Africa, celebrating the incredible growth of the sport across the continent and uniting athletes from all corners of the globe.
Official start-lists confirm the extraordinary global appeal of this historic event. The Kenyan rapids will see 62 teams from 15 different nations ready to battle for continental glory and crucia points; more than 200 athletes racing in 26 Men crews, 18 Mixed crews, 16 Women crews and 2 Para-Rafting crews - a proud milestone for the Federation as we continue to champion absolute inclusivity in sports.
The participating countries present an exceptional blend of emerging African powerhouses and established international rafting nations: Kenya (host), Democratic Republic of the Congo (COD), Uganda (UGA), South Sudan (SSD), Nigeria (NGR), Burundi (BDI), Morocco (MAR), Tanzania (TAN), Sudan (SUD), Rwanda (RWA), and Zimbabwe (ZIM). Rest of the World & Delegations: Italy (ITA), Japan (JPN), Czech Republic (CZE), and Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN).
Last night's opening celebration at Sagana Rapid Camp perfectly embodied the true spirit of rafting: unity, respect, and a shared passion for nature. Featuring vibrant traditional Kenyan dances, live music, and welcoming addresses from local authorities and United Rafting executives, athletes proudly marched under their national flags right along the riverbanks that will serve as their battleground over the coming days.
The organizing committee expressed deep gratitude to the local community of Sagana for welcoming the international rafting circus with unmatched warmth, proving that Africa not only possesses world-class rapids but also the hospitality and infrastructure required to host major global sporting events.
The sporting action bursts into life today with the Sprint discipline, where fractions of a second will separate the podium finishers. The African rapids are roaring and ready to test the technique, grit, and synchronization of the world's finest paddlers.
Let the challenge begin. Hakuna Matata, and may the best teams win!
