How many 27-year-olds do you know who balance university studies, work as a chef, train as elite athletes, and run a national sports federation?
Meet June Muthoni Kariuki, the newly turned 27-year-old President of the Kenyan Rafting Federation. She is the definition of a driven, versatile, and fiercely focused young woman who is redefining what leadership looks like in the world of extreme sports.
June’s relationship with the water didn't start in a boardroom; it started on the riverbanks. At just 10 years old, she began volunteering around the river, learning its currents and its community. Her passion naturally evolved from supporting on the riverside to kayaking, and ultimately, to white-water rafting.
"The level of teamwork required to navigate a rapid and draw the perfect line fascinated me instantly. The river has not to be conquered but felt and explored, and the best way I found to do that is with your companions, where everyone is literally a part of the boat”
While most people would focus solely on their athletic or culinary careers, June saw a bigger picture. She seamlessly blends every aspect of her life, growing progressively while lifting up those around her. Just last year, she brought the Kenyan rafting movement to the worldwide stage.
Under her leadership, the Kenyan movement has proven to be incredibly robust. Despite being a young federation, June has already led her athletes to the World Championships in Argentina (November 2025) and most recently to the World Cup in France (April 2026), where the Kenyan team showcased exponential growth. They didn't just participate—they proved their commitment and dedication on the global stage, pleasantly surprising the international rafting community. This success is built on passion and dedication: June and her athletes hit the rapids every single weekend, balancing intense training with their daily jobs and studies.
On the other hand launching a new sport in a country world-famous for athletics has been a challenge, but June with a 360 vision, found the way to the river. “Competitions are the perfect way to get young people close to the river—the competitive edge naturally draws them in. While it’s easier to get men involved, I am taking on the challenge with women by leading by example."

Now, June is bringing the world to her home spot. She is officially inviting the rafting community to the upcoming African Rafting Championship in Kenya this July.
It is set to be a mural celebration of the sport, featuring: 29 nations present to witness and support the event and 19 countries actively competing on the wild Kenyan rapids.
June Muthoni Kariuki is proof that you don't need decades to build a solid movement—you just need a clear, multi-disciplinary vision, relentless work ethic, and an unbreakable bond with the river. Come to Kenya this July and witness the movement firsthand!
