On June 11, 2026, the Africa Continental Assembly of United Rafting was convened to elect the continent's new leadership. Out of seven eligible National Federations five were represented, resulting in a 71.4% voter turnout. The participating federations included Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Togo, and Tunisia.
Addressing the assembly, United Rafting President Danilo Barmaz emphasized Africa's extensive river systems, rich natural heritage, and growing potential in outdoor sports. Barmaz highlighted the need to transform rafting from a commercial tourism product into a fully recognized competitive sport with strong national programs. He heavily promoted youth development, environmental protection, and community engagement as vital pillars for the future.
Mr. El Mamoun Belabbas (Morocco) was unanimously elected as the President of the African Continental Council, securing 100% of the vote. In his address, Belabbas celebrated past milestones, such as the first African Championship held in Kenya and stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation to expand Africa's presence in international competitions.
The assembly also elected four dedicated Council Members to drive the sport forward. Ms. June Muthoni Kariuki (Kenya), who also secured 100% of the vote, championed the need for greater female representation in leadership, officiating, and athletic participation. She was joined by Mr. Gideon Ofosu Boateng (Ghana), who emphasized safety and youth participation, Mr. Davison Tshuma (Zimbabwe), who advocated for international competitive opportunities, and Mr. Simedo Comlan Mawuko (Togo), who reinforced the commitment to developing rafting as a genuine competitive sport.
With unity and a shared vision the newly elected African Continental Council is poised to elevate the sport, empowering athletes and communities across the continent.
