Sagana, Kenya - History is being made this week in Sagana, Kenya, as the continent unites for the very first African Rafting Championships — an important milestone in the build-up to next year’s full series of continental championships (Africa, Europe, Pan-America, Asia...) under the global rafting calendar.
Hosted by the Kenya Rafting Federation in partnership with the African Rafting Council of the World Rafting Federation (WRF), the event will welcome 120 athletes from across the continent, bringing together some of Africa’s most passionate and promising whitewater talent from 10 nations: DRC Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, South Sudan, Sudan, Nigeria, Morocco, Tanzania and Kenya.
These teams will race in Downriver, Slalom and RX. The event kicks off on Monday, July 14th, with team arrivals and accreditation throughout the day, followed by a welcome cocktail and dinner in the evening at Havila Resort and Rapids Camp. There will be speeches from key officials, including the Local Organizing Committee, the Kenya Rafting Federation, the African Rafting Council, and the World Rafting Federation.
On Tuesday the competition officially begins with a morning meeting for team managers and heads of delegation, followed by the Downriver training rounds on the Sagana River. Wednesday continues with another team managers’ meeting in the morning, and then the Downriver race later in the day, again on the Sagana River. On Thursday teams will gather for the slalom training at the official rafting course, following the usual team meeting in the morning. Friday will host the Slalom race at Rapids Camp in Sagana, with the best teams battling it out for the podium. The action heats up on Saturday with the RX Quali taking place on the rafting course. Finally, on Sunday we wrap up the event with the RX Knock-out, followed by the medal ceremony and official closing ceremony.
